From air traffic control systems to maritime tech, Gilles has always gravitated toward product roles in mission critical decision-making environments.

With a background in computer engineering and a PhD in Human-Computer Interaction, he started by designing tools for air traffic controllers - an environment where clarity is critical and every decision matters.

Since then, he’s stayed close to one thing: building products for people making real-world decisions.

Today, as the Product Designer for Syroco, he helps shape the solution across the full user journey, from voyage preparation to decisions at sea, and post-voyage analysis.

What drives him?

Gilles works on tools used by captains, operators and Onwatch teams to prepare voyages, navigate, and learn from past routes.

What drives him most? Make these different users work together.

Crews, onshore teams, and internal operations all rely on the same information, but use it differently. His role is to connect these perspectives, making sure everyone shares the same understanding at the right moment.

The latest new location is part of Syroco's ambitious expansion scheme across Europe, which has now seen four new offices open in the last 12 months.

Oslo, Norway - 10 March 2026 - Climate tech specialist Syroco has today announced the opening of its new office in Oslo, Norway, as part of an ambitious expansion scheme across Europe. The new location follows a period of massive growth, with the number of vessels deploying its Syroco Live voyage and weather optimisation platform having doubled in scale, validating the solution's clear return on investment (ROI) and operational efficiency.

The Oslo office will serve as the commercial and service hub for Syroco's rapidly expanding client base across Northern Europe, a region critical to global shipping and at the forefront of the industry's decarbonisation efforts. It comes after Marseille, France-headquartered Syroco has also recently opened new offices in key maritime hubs across Europe, including Hamburg, Germany; London, the UK; and Athens, Greece.

Syroco's platform, which leverages high-fidelity digital twins of vessels, has gained significant traction, with deployments now supporting leading carriers, including companies Odfjell and Knutsen LNG, as well as many other global players. This doubling of fleet deployment also underscores the market's demand for proven, scalable optimisation technology that delivers tangible results without compromising safety.

Political science, public affairs internships, a year of civic service in a disadvantaged neighbourhood, a semester abroad in Chile - Apolline Berge did not initially plan to work in maritime technology.

Yet one thread runs through her path: the search for tangible impact.

During her civic service, working closely with local communities reshaped her ambitions.

"I realised I wanted something more concrete. A job where I could see the impact directly."

Today, as a Key Account Manager at Syroco, she ensures that innovation does not remain theoretical - but becomes embedded in real fleet operations.

What drives her?

Apolline's role begins once a client entrusts Syroco with part of their fleet.

She works primarily with fleet operators, project leads and decision-makers ashore. She coordinates deployment, aligns internal teams, translates operational constraints, and demonstrates measurable results.

Captains are supported daily at sea by the Syroco Onwatch teams. Apolline focuses on building confidence ashore - ensuring that the solution is understood, adopted and expanded over time.

What motivates her? "Seeing optimisation move from the first few vessels to wider fleet adoption - when a pilot project turns into standard practice."

What matters most?

The CORIMER Low Carbon Ships Call for Projects supports innovative solutions capable of delivering rapid and sustainable reductions in emissions of maritime transport. The project led by Syroco is built on the next generation of Syroco Live, its voyage optimisation solution. The platform combines advanced physical modelling, artificial intelligence and real time operational data to create a dynamic digital twin of the vessel. By integrating actual operational constraints alongside each vessel’s technical characteristics, Syroco Live recommends optimised navigation strategies that reduce fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions while improving operational efficiency.

Meet Mathieu, Naval Performance Engineer

From competitive sailing to naval performance engineering, Mathieu Cadei’s journey has been shaped by a constant desire to improve things - step by step, with rigour.

Growing up in Switzerland, he discovered sailing early on and quickly moved into competition. Alongside sailing, he wanted to stay close to the maritime world while developing strong technical expertise. This naturally led him to study naval architecture in Southampton (UK), where he completed a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degree, specialising in vessel performance prediction and fluid mechanics.

After graduating, Mathieu began his professional career in the UK. For three years, he worked in a naval architecture and engineering consultancy specialised in motor superyachts, contributing to international projects across Europe. While the engineering challenges were stimulating, he gradually felt the need for change - both professionally and personally - and decided to return to the continent.

That’s when he discovered Syroco.

“I wanted to use my engineering skills for something that had more meaning.”

At Syroco, Mathieu works as a Naval Performance Engineer, contributing to the prediction and modelling of vessel performance as well as to the development of digital twins of vessels. His job is to ensure that these models accurately reflect real operating conditions - wind, waves, propulsion and speed - so that they can be used with confidence in operational decision-making.

What motivates him most is the continuous refinement behind the models: improving performance predictions, working on specific technical aspects such as propulsion behaviour or vessel response in waves, and pushing the models further as Syroco grows.

“What I’m most passionate about is being able to keep refining the models over time, ensuring that they are as accurate as possible. There is always something to improve - adjusting the models, capturing better complex physical phenomena, and reducing the gap between theory and reality.”

Mathieu still competes in sailing, mainly in coastal racing, where tactics and close calls keep things intense. Running and skiing help him reset and keep perspective - on the water and beyond.

Knutsen deploys Syroco Live across its LNG tanker fleet following successful initial rollout

How Weather Impacts Fuel Consumption and Emissions

In the drive towards maritime decarbonisation, weather is often treated as an uncontrollable background factor, something to endure rather than quantify. Yet for shipowners, operators and charterers, weather is one of the most significant variables influencing fuel consumption, voyage performance and emissions. Two voyages by the same vessel on the same route and at the same power setting can produce very different outcomes simply because the environmental conditions were not the same.

Understanding how weather affects a vessel’s energy requirements is essential not only for operational efficiency but also for managing exposure to regulations such as CII, the EU ETS and FuelEU Maritime. Weather is not only a safety or routing concern. It is a major economic and environmental one.

The physics: why weather changes a vessel’s energy demand

Ships expend energy to overcome two main types of resistance:

Weather influences both of these. Waves, swell, currents and wind dramatically affect the total resistance a ship must overcome. Even at a constant power setting, the vessel’s speed may fluctuate significantly depending on the conditions.

This is why two otherwise identical voyages can produce very different fuel consumption and emissions figures.

Waves and sea state: the most complex source of added resistance

Sea state has the strongest influence on fuel consumption. Waves introduce several forms of added resistance, including:

The degree of impact depends not only on wave height but also on wave period, steepness and direction. Long-period swell can be highly disruptive, while short, steep wind waves generate more violent motions.

In adverse sea states, propulsion power requirements can increase by 30 to 50 per cent or more. For container vessels and RoRo ships, the penalty can be higher still.

Currents and swell misalignment

Currents have a decisive impact on real-world vessel performance:

Major currents such as the Gulf Stream, the Agulhas Current and the Kuroshio can significantly influence voyage efficiency depending on their strength and position. Tidal currents, if not correctly leveraged, also have a significant impact on performance.

A more subtle factor is swell and wind misalignment. When swell arrives from one direction and wind-generated waves from another, the vessel may experience destabilising motions. This forces the autopilot to make frequent adjustments, leading to increased rudder use, higher drag and additional fuel consumption.

Wind: a major aerodynamic driver of extra fuel burn

Wind can impose a substantial fuel penalty, especially for vessels with significant windage (containerships, car carriers, passenger vessels, etc.).

Whether directly or indirectly, wind-driven forces translate into higher emissions.

Weather avoidance, slow steaming and operational decisions

Weather affects not only resistance but also decision-making on the bridge and in fleet operation centres.

Masters often reduce speed in heavy seas to protect the vessel and crew. Slow steaming reduces fuel consumption per hour but increases total voyage time. Depending on conditions, overall fuel consumption for a weather-affected voyage may rise.

Weather-optimised routing can produce notable benefits. By adjusting route and speed based on forecasts and vessel-specific performance models, operators achieve fuel savings while avoiding unsafe conditions.

Weather is therefore both a constraint and an opportunity. With accurate modelling and informed decision-making, it becomes a tool for efficiency rather than simply a hazard.

Regulatory implications: CII, EU ETS, FuelEU Maritime (and more to come)

Weather’s impact on fuel consumption has direct consequences for regulatory compliance.

CII (Carbon Intensity Indicator): because the CII of a vessel reflects (in a nutshell) her CO2 emissions per nautical mile, adverse weather that reduces speed over ground and increases fuel burn can negatively affect annual ratings.
EU ETS & FuelEU Maritime: fuel consumption directly influences carbon costs, voyages that encounter poor weather incur higher EU ETS exposure and decreased FuelEU compliance due to additional emissions.

Accurate quantification of weather impacts is increasingly important for compliance planning, budgeting and fleet performance management.

Conclusion: weather as a strategic variable in maritime decarbonisation

Weather profoundly affects vessel performance, fuel consumption and emissions. From wave-induced resistance to wind-driven drag and current variability, environmental conditions shape the economic and environmental profile of every voyage.

As the decarbonisation agenda advances and regulatory requirements tighten, weather can no longer be considered an external, unpredictable influence. It must be integrated into performance analysis, voyage planning and optimisation processes.

Stemming from Rishikesh in northern India - known as the city of yoga - Ashutosh has followed a path shaped by curiosity, responsibility and a deep sense of care. And indeed, what stands out most in his journey is the quiet responsibility he carries - and the thoughtful way he supports those at sea.

After studying electrical engineering, he spent several years working in the social sector, supporting children in shelter homes and contributing to public policy initiatives in his home state.

In 2019, he discovered voyage optimisation and shifted fully into weather routing and vessel performance analysis. This combination of technical work and human-centred purpose is what now defines his role at Syroco.

For Ashutosh, everything begins with a simple question:

“Would I sail this route if I was on board?”
