&lt;p&gt;Gilles works on tools used by captains, operators and &lt;a style="color: #1a73e8;" href="https://syro.co/en/syroco-onwatch/"&gt;Onwatch teams&lt;/a&gt; to &lt;strong&gt;prepare voyages, navigate, and learn from past routes&lt;/strong&gt;.&lt;/p&gt; 
&lt;p&gt;What drives him most? &lt;strong&gt;Make these different users work together&lt;/strong&gt;.&lt;/p&gt; 
&lt;p&gt;Crews, onshore teams, and internal operations all rely on the same information, but use it differently. His role is to connect these perspectives, making sure everyone shares the same understanding at the right moment.&lt;/p&gt; 
&lt;h4 style="color: #0e3249; line-height: 28px;"&gt;What motivates him?&lt;/h4&gt; 
&lt;p&gt;Making tools that actually fit how people work.&lt;/p&gt; 
&lt;p&gt;He’s spent his career working on systems where decisions matter, and where tools need to support users, not get in the way.&lt;/p&gt; 
&lt;p&gt;For him, it’s about staying close to real usage, and making sure what’s designed onshore makes sense at sea.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Growing up in Switzerland, he discovered sailing early on and quickly moved into competition. Alongside sailing, he wanted to stay close to the maritime world while developing strong technical expertise. This naturally led him to study naval architecture in Southampton (UK), where he completed a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degree, specialising in &lt;a style="color: #1a73e8;" href="https://syro.co/en/news/how-weather-impacts-fuel-consumption-and-emissions/"&gt;vessel performance prediction&lt;/a&gt; and fluid mechanics.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;After graduating, Mathieu began his professional career in the UK. For three years, he worked in a naval architecture and engineering consultancy specialised in motor superyachts, contributing to international projects across Europe. While the engineering challenges were stimulating, he gradually felt the need for change - both professionally and personally - and decided to return to the continent.&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;That’s when he discovered Syroco.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;i&gt;“I wanted to use my engineering skills for something that had more meaning.”&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;At Syroco, Mathieu works as a Naval Performance Engineer, contributing to the prediction and modelling of vessel performance as well as to the development of &lt;a style="color: #1a73e8;" href="https://syro.co/en/digital-twin/"&gt;digital twins&lt;/a&gt; of vessels. His job is to ensure that these models accurately reflect real operating conditions - wind, waves, propulsion and speed - so that they can be used with confidence in &lt;a style="color: #1a73e8;" href="https://syro.co/en/syroco-live-features/"&gt;operational decision-making&lt;/a&gt;.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;What motivates him most is the continuous refinement behind the models: improving performance predictions, working on specific technical aspects such as &lt;a style="color: #1a73e8;" href="https://syro.co/en/news/integrating-ship-propulsion-and-energy-models-digital-twin/"&gt;propulsion behaviour&lt;/a&gt; or vessel response in waves, and pushing the models further as Syroco grows.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;i&gt;“What I’m most passionate about is being able to keep refining the models over time, ensuring that they are as accurate as possible. There is always something to improve - adjusting the models, capturing better complex physical phenomena, and reducing the gap between theory and reality.”&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Mathieu still competes in sailing, mainly in coastal racing, where tactics and close calls keep things intense. Running and skiing help him reset and keep perspective - on the water and beyond.&lt;/p&gt;

Weather is not only a safety or routing concern. It is a major economic and environmental one.&lt;/p&gt; 
&lt;h4 style="color: #0e3249; line-height: 28px;"&gt;The physics: why weather changes a vessel’s energy demand&lt;/h4&gt; 
&lt;p&gt;Ships expend energy to overcome two main types of resistance:&lt;/p&gt; 
&lt;p&gt;Weather influences both of these. Waves, swell, currents and wind dramatically affect the total resistance a ship must overcome. Even at a constant power setting, the vessel’s speed may fluctuate significantly depending on the conditions.&lt;/p&gt; 
&lt;p&gt;This is why two otherwise identical voyages can produce very different fuel consumption and emissions figures.&lt;/p&gt; 
&lt;h4 style="color: #0e3249; line-height: 28px;"&gt;Waves and sea state: the most complex source of added resistance&lt;/h4&gt; 
&lt;p&gt;Sea state has the strongest influence on fuel consumption. Waves introduce several forms of added resistance, including:&lt;/p&gt; 
&lt;p&gt;The degree of impact depends not only on wave height but also on wave period, steepness and direction. Long-period swell can be highly disruptive, while short, steep wind waves generate more violent motions.&lt;/p&gt; 
&lt;p&gt;In adverse sea states, propulsion power requirements can increase by 30 to 50 per cent or more. For container vessels and RoRo ships, the penalty can be higher still.&lt;/p&gt; 
&lt;h4 style="color: #0e3249; line-height: 28px;"&gt;Currents and swell misalignment&lt;/h4&gt; 
&lt;p&gt;Currents have a decisive impact on real-world vessel performance:&lt;/p&gt; 
&lt;p&gt;Major currents such as the Gulf Stream, the Agulhas Current and the Kuroshio can significantly influence voyage efficiency depending on their strength and position. Tidal currents, if not correctly leveraged, also have a significant impact on performance.&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt; 
&lt;p&gt;A more subtle factor is swell and wind misalignment. When swell arrives from one direction and wind-generated waves from another, the vessel may experience destabilising motions. This forces the autopilot to make frequent adjustments, leading to increased rudder use, higher drag and additional fuel consumption.&lt;/p&gt; 
&lt;h4 style="color: #0e3249; line-height: 28px;"&gt;Wind: a major aerodynamic driver of extra fuel burn&lt;/h4&gt; 
&lt;p&gt;Wind can impose a substantial fuel penalty, especially for vessels with significant windage (containerships, car carriers, passenger vessels, etc.).&lt;/p&gt; 
&lt;p&gt;Whether directly or indirectly, wind-driven forces translate into higher emissions.&lt;/p&gt; 
&lt;h4 style="color: #0e3249; line-height: 28px;"&gt;Weather avoidance, slow steaming and operational decisions&lt;/h4&gt; 
&lt;p&gt;Weather affects not only resistance but also &lt;a style="color: #1a73e8;" href="https://syro.co/en/syroco-live-features/"&gt;decision-making&lt;/a&gt; on the bridge and in fleet operation centres.&lt;/p&gt; 
&lt;p&gt;Masters often reduce speed in heavy seas to protect the vessel and crew. Slow steaming reduces fuel consumption per hour but increases total voyage time. Depending on conditions, overall fuel consumption for a weather-affected voyage may rise.&lt;/p&gt; 
&lt;p&gt;&lt;a style="color: #1a73e8;" href="https://syro.co/en/syroco-live/"&gt;Weather-optimised routing&lt;/a&gt; can produce notable benefits. By adjusting route and speed based on forecasts and vessel-specific performance models, operators achieve fuel savings while avoiding unsafe conditions.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Stemming from Rishikesh in northern India - known as the city of yoga - Ashutosh has followed a path shaped by curiosity, responsibility and a deep sense of care. And indeed, what stands out most in his journey is the quiet responsibility he carries - and the thoughtful way &lt;a style="color: #1a73e8;" href="https://syro.co/en/syroco-onwatch/"&gt;he supports those at sea&lt;/a&gt;.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;After studying electrical engineering, he spent several years working in the social sector, supporting children in shelter homes and contributing to public policy initiatives in his home state.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;In 2019, he discovered &lt;a style="color: #1a73e8;" href="https://syro.co/en/syroco-live/"&gt;voyage optimisation&lt;/a&gt; and shifted fully into &lt;a style="color: #1a73e8;" href="https://syro.co/en/news/multi-objective-weather-routing/"&gt;weather routing&lt;/a&gt; and vessel performance analysis.
