Senior Data Scientist

Engineering | Marseille

Role Overview

We are seeking a skilled and motivated Data Scientist to join our team at Syroco. In this role, you will focus on researching, developing, and validating advanced machine learning models that integrate physics-based approaches with artificial intelligence techniques. These hybrid models play a central role in our weather routing and vessel performance optimization solutions.

Your responsibilities will include exploring and preprocessing complex datasets, engineering meaningful features, selecting and fine-tuning algorithms, and ensuring robustness and reliability in the resulting models. You will work closely with ML Engineers and domain experts to align your models with real-world operational constraints.

This is an exciting opportunity to optimize vessel performance, reduce fuel consumption, and lower environmental impact through cutting-edge data science and hybrid modeling techniques.

If you're passionate about solving complex problems at the intersection of data science, physics, and AI, we’d love to hear from you.

Key Responsibilities

  • Model development & Research
    • Explore and preprocess large maritime datasets, identifying relevant features.
    • Build and refine ML models (regression, classification, time-series forecasting) aligned with well-defined KPIs.
  • Mathematics & Statistics Expertise
    • Apply mathematical and statistical principles to ensure model robustness and interpretability.
    • Analyze and validate model outputs to guide data-driven decisions.
  • Performance Evaluation & Optimization
    • Conduct hyperparameter tuning, performance testing, and error analysis.
    • Use validation metrics and experiment tracking tools to continuously improve model performance.
  • Collaboration & Knowledge Sharing
    • Work closely with ML Engineers for smooth model handoff to production environments.
    • Partner with domain experts (e.g., naval architects, maritime specialists) to align ML solutions with operational constraints.
    • Share insights and findings with cross-functional teams to foster knowledge exchange.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Educational Background: Master’s degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, or related field.
  • Technical skills:
    • Proficiency in Python and core libraries (NumPy, pandas, scikit-learn, TensorFlow, PyTorch).
    • Strong understanding of statistical methods, machine learning fundamentals, and time-series data processing.
  • Professional Experience
    • 4+ years of experience in developing and validating ML models in a research or industry setting.
    • Experience with time-series data or sensor data is a plus.
  • Soft Skills:
    • Strong analytical thinking and problem-solving mindset.
    • Effective communication and collaboration skills.
    • Adaptability in a dynamic, cross-functional environment.

What We Offer

  • Competitive compensation package commensurate with experience.
  • Access to company equity.
  • Collaborative work environment with a commitment to sustainability and excellence.
  • Professional growth and development opportunities.
