Why Arriving Early Can Cost You as Much Fuel as Arriving Late
Arriving early can look like a win. The ETA is met, the port is in sight, the vessel is ahead of schedule. But an early arrival is not always an efficient one, and this is exactly the kind of problem voyage optimisation is built to solve.
A vessel can reach the port area and still spend hours, sometimes days, waiting outside it. That waiting time has a cost: extra fuel burned to arrive too early, additional emissions generated, operational uncertainty for both ship and shore. The reason is simple: a port call doesn't depend only on speed or route. The objective isn't to arrive sooner. It's to arrive when the port is ready. This is why voyage optimisation is not only about finding the best route - it's about aligning speed, timing and the operational reality at the port.
Concretely, this means simulating the specific ship on the specific route it will sail, then adjusting speed so the vessel reaches port exactly when it can be received - not earlier, burning fuel to wait, not later, missing the slot. Research commissioned by the Low Carbon GIA has found that Just-In-Time Arrival can meaningfully cut fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions per voyage, simply by optimising speed to arrive when the port is actually ready. The IMO notes containerships can implement JIT fastest, given fewer contractual barriers and more predictable schedules. A 2022 study on this segment found savings of up to 14.2% per voyage. Other vessel types are expected to benefit too.
